Children from Hunsley Primary Reception class had a taste of life as a research scientist on Tuesday when they took part in a workshop with the Lab Rascals, complete with white lab-coats!
The workshop was enjoyed by all as part of the Big Question being investigated this half term: What is the importance of light? This investigation has also seen the children finding out about changing seasonal light outside on their ‘Walking Bus’ venture; getting to know more about the importance of light to different faiths and cultures by looking at Hanukkah and Diwali, and experimenting with light in their school’s own Dark Den!
The children donned their lab-coats on Tuesday this week to explore light waves and the colour spectrum, build a CD spectrometer, design glow-in-the-dark Christmas pictures and UV sensitive bracelets which will be worn in summer to let children and parents know if they are exposed to UV light form the sun – perfect for playing out in garden! They even got to explore how clean their hands were after hand-washing using a UV detector to spot lingering germs!
Lab Rascals (who are based at the University of Hull) have worked with the school before, supporting Hunsley Primary’s enquiry-based curriculum. A great time was had by all of our budding scientists!
